The Nyumbani Book Club – “to be home” in Kiswahili – is an association for scientific and cultural mediation which develops artistic projects dedicated to the joining of the social sciences and the arts, from and about Africas as well as their diasporas. Its events broach political, feminist and migrant perspectives. The chosen theme for the 2024 season is exile.
The Nyumbani Book Club was born out of urban strolls through the busy stalls of the Central Business District on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi and the warm conversations held on the Place de l’Indépendance in Dakar. It invites you on a unique journey to discover the singular voices of the continent.
Using a range of academic and artistic media (painting, essays, poetry, theatre, etc.), the club aims to engage in critical reflection on the issues raised in the works presented, with a particular focus on women’s conditions. The choice of Bétonsalon as a venue for meetings and discussions underlines the importance of this fruitful dialogue between art and research.
The first meeting at Bétonsalon will feature readings and discussions on Cristina Ali Farah’s Madre Piccola (Éditions Zulma, 2023).
