“Exploring sonic hybridities” with artist Célin Jiang
This workshop invites you to take a sound journey guided by artist Célin Jiang. In the framework of the exhibition “Un-Tuning Together. Practicing listening with Pauline Oliveros” at Bétonsalon, it takes as its starting point the deep listening and collective improvisation practices of composer Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016), who encourages us to stretch out our ears to grasp what lies beneath the surface of the audible.
At the crossroads of technology and sound, Célin Jiang proposes a collective exploration of listening and improvised sound creation inspired by her cyberfeminist research. Through a series of experiments, protocols and tools devised by the artist, the aim is to question the way in which technologies and our sensitive experiences – for example, the primacy of sight in the West – mediate our cultural conceptions and our relationship to the world. By questioning the mechanisms of power and control in the soundscapes that make up our everyday horizons (between voices, city, university, music and hubbub), we will be seeking to decolonize our approach to sound and listening, and to awaken the spiritual, political and poetic potential of our acoustic experiences. We’ll be using a variety of sound sources, both organic and electronic, traditional and contemporary, to create a hybrid space for exploration and emancipation based on our respective listening experiences. Collective improvisation, attentiveness and sharing will be the driving forces behind our creativity.
