Proposition de colloque, Kadist Art Foundation

April 21 - April 22, 2007

A Bétonsalon project conceived by Mélanie Bouteloup and Anna Colin.

‘Proposition de Colloque’ (translated ‘Proposal for a Seminar’) articulates various forms of speech and means to establish a dialogue in today’s artistic and curatorial production. Artists, designers and curators working around the notions of dialogue and network, and who use the seminar, conference and workshop as artistic or curatorial medium, will be invited to expose their practice through presentations, interventions and debates.

The public and speakers will sit on a modular sculpture (Functional Floor, 2001) realised by the artist Nicolas Floc’h. Artist Julien Tiberi will render drawings during the course of the event, where he will take the role of portrayer of the audience. He will restitute the progress of the seminar via images, like an ensemble of dramaturgical effects fabricated by speech.

"Arts of doing: mutualisations, constructions, collaborations" will explore the construction of relations and the creation of networks both as theoretical precept – thinking about self-education – and as mode of civic and political action. The network will be approached as an open space permitting (via the elaboration of a dialogue between disciplines and the sharing of skills) the participation to the establishment of common policies (Zagreb Cultural Kapital 3000) ; the creation of links with the civil society (La Générale); and the development of knowledge and artistic production within a self-organised structure, far away from the traditional institutional model (PAF).

"Mises en scène: work methods and means of presentation based on speech and exchange" will observe a few practices using some of the aforementioned tools, yet in a more reflexive way. "Mises en scène" will concentrate more particularly on discursive strategies as employed by curators and critics to circumvent formats that are conventionally attached to the presentation of art.
Lastly, "Speech act" will stage the work of artists Benoît Maire and Patrick Bernier who, respectively, in dialogue with himself and with a “conteur”, propose a study of speech. In conclusion to ‘Proposition de Colloque’, London-based design collective åbäke will perform "My Dinner with åbäke, présentation formelle", an intervention using their conference series ‘Presentation Formal’ as backdrop.
