La musique au travail

April 4 - April 7, 2012
Soigne ta droite de J.L. Godard,

Bétonsalon – Centre for Art and Research and the Ateliers Cinéma of Paris Diderot (UFR LAC) have the pleasure to present La Musique au travail. The exhibition surveys the work of the students from the Master 1 workshop « Pratique artistique du cinéma » 2011-2012, directed by Noëlle Pujol.

Noëlle Pujol proposed to her students this year to focus their practice on the process of figuration in musical creation. Prompting the following questions: how does one represent music when it is in the process of being made, how does one film and stage sound and how does one give shape to the research, repetition and invention by musicians?

It is in understanding music as an autonomous aesthetic matter that one can consider measuring sound as an equal visual power. The students were required to take this point of departure: to film the work of musicians through a series of sequence shots and to feel and transmit that which occurs for musicians by filming continued durations and assessing the internal dynamics of a given instant. Following from their series of sequence shots realised in the form of sound clip video installations, the directors (in groups of two or three) were required to then consider the presentation of their films in the context of an exhibition space.

The exhibition « La musique au travail » is the second project of the collaboration initiated in 2010 between the Ateliers Cinéma and Bétonsalon. To mark the opening of the exhibition, there will be musical performances by the musicians/protagonists of the films and by a group of students in the workshops.
